A green abstract weaving with repeating square motifs and layered strands

Completed in March 2026, Portal Weaving was one of my first experiments in moving away from purely crochet as an artist. The plywood gave me a sturdy base for creating a tight wrap.

I created the piece as I went, without a plan, to see what kinds of motifs were possible. The square motifs repeated throughout the artwork began to remind me of portals, giving the piece its name. By working in only one color, I could focus on the texture of the weaving and how each motif changed depending on which strand was in front. Those overlapping strands create the illusion of more depth than is physically present in the piece.
