Splat #1

This piece became an experiment in moving with “mistakes” instead of fighting them. My largest section would not stay flat no matter how many times I tried to flatten it, so I turned it into a pocket and let the drips seamlessly flow out of it. Later, when a small ripple became impossible to flatten, I turned it into a long tube with a knot that connects to a separate orange circle “start.”

If those “mistakes” had not happened, I would not have considered adding these three-dimensional elements. They make the piece more visually interesting, more tactile, and more fun to touch.

The different shapes remind me of being a child and staring at the texture on the walls until I could see faces, animals, and people in it. I see alien and UFO-like forms in this piece, especially in the drips, strange tubing, and upper-right corner. Someone else might see an amoeba, cells, or something completely different. I like that no one has to see the same thing I do. This piece let me fully embrace my inner child and do whatever “felt right.”
