While creating Splat #2, I had a hard time keeping the main section flat as it grew. Folding away the extra fabric created little “ears,” which became natural starting points for the dangling elements instead of something I needed to fix.
I chose a rectangular canvas so I could sew on another piece rather than building the entire work around one splat. As I worked, its shape began to look like a key with a heart on it. Paired with the reds, pinks, and oranges I was already using, that resemblance led me to create an anatomical heart dangling from a braided aorta and other vessels.
At the bottom, I used a faux-knit crochet stitch to make a bouquet-like wrap that gathers the pulmonary veins. A smaller Valentine heart motif ties the warm colors and heart imagery together.
